PhD position (m/f/d) in experimental Biophysical Chemistry of redox proteins

PhD position (m/f/d) in experimental Biophysical Chemistry of redox proteins at the University of Bonn (50% TV-L E13) for a minimum period of 3 years. Starting date: 01.04.2021.


The newly established Kielb group at the Institute of Physical and Theoretical Chemistry is interested in mechanistic investigations of redox biocatalytic systems that catalyze key sustainable reactions in nature that can be harnessed for the development of new biohybrid electroactive interfaces applicable in bioelectronics and energy conversion economy. Towards this goal, we employ spectro-electrochemical methods like surface-enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERR) combined with electrochemistry and protein engineering techniques.


The group is searching for a motivated PhD student to join the project focused on studying the structure-function relationship of natural and artificial heme- and copper-containing enzymes performing oxygen reduction reactions. The research aim is divided into two directions, 1) fundamental studies of how nature utilizing metalloenzymes perform complex redox reactions and 2) transfer of this knowledge in the rational design of biohybrid systems of tuned redox functionalities.


We offer:

  • The development and application of multidisciplinary approaches to study redox metalloproteins, including resonance Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced resonance Raman, electrochemistry, and biochemistry;

Your profile:

  • Completed academic university degree (Master’s, Diploma) in chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, or in one of the related fields of natural sciences;
  • Strong background in at least one of the following fields: protein biochemistry, physical chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, or biophysics;
  • Initial experience with vibrational spectroscopy or electrochemistry is desirable;
  • Ability to work independently on a scientific project;
  • Good knowledge of English;
  • Fun and fascination with science;
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment and international team.
